International registration of trademarks

Accession of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the Madrid Protocol

On 28 September 2021, the Government of the United Arab Emirates deposited its instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

This brings the number of contracting parties to this international agreement, which now covers 125 territories, to 109.

Thanks to the unified registration system, trademark owners will be able, from 28 December 2021, to apply for protection of their trademarks through the Madrid system if they market their goods and services in the UAE.

The UAE is the third Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country to join the Madrid Union, along with Bahrain and Oman.

The Madrid System is a key element of global trademark protection and offers trademark owners around the world a convenient and cost-effective solution to international trademark protection.
